Recently, my PhD Thesis has been published as a book by Verlag Dr Mueller, titled Face Detection with Asymmetric Boosting: Principled Methods to Rapid Learning and Classification. The book is the first book in my career.  It is co-authored by my supervisor, Dr. Tat-Jen Cham. It can be ordered from a number of sites: amazon.com, amazon.de, amazon.co.uk, blackwell.co.uk, and a few other libraries. My PhD Oral Examination PDF Print E-mail

After a 10-month long wait, I finally had my PhD Oral Examination scheduled on 3 April 2009. I was surprised and grateful as there were so many people attending my presentation. Fortunately, I made a video recording of the presentation. It was one hour long, so I divided the video recording into some parts.

Without further ado, I present to you the first part of my PhD Oral Examination, which gives an overview of state-of-the-art appearance-based face detection. Appologies for my bad English, I was trying hard but it was difficult as I had  been living for 10 years in a country where English was typically spoken with grammatical errors.

  • Local NTU campus users can download the whole video recording here.

ctypes-opencv 0.7.0 released on the last day of 2008 PDF Print E-mail

ctypes-opencv is a package that brings Intel's Open Source Computer Vision Library (OpenCV) to Python. I have developed this package for a year. It has come to a stable state.

I released the latest version of ctypes-opencv, 0.7.0, on 31 December 2008. Before the release, I had put a lot of efforts in making the package robust, easy-to-use, yet efficient. I have received suggestions and contributions from a few people, especially from David Bolen. I have learned many good things from my email exchanges with these wonderful people . I really appreciate them, and sincerely thank you all for having spent your time with me in improving ctypes-opencv.

I consider ctypes-opencv as a contribution back to the OpenCV's community, as I have used OpenCV for nearly five years for my research. OpenCV a must-have package for any computer visionist. I am proud that I have contributed a small piece of work to the devlopment of OpenCV.

A trip to Anchorage to present my CVPR'08 paper PDF Print E-mail

I went to Anchorage, Alaska from 22 June 2008 to 2 July 2008 together with my junior, Viet Dung, to attend the IEEE Computer Society Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition 2008. It was the third time I have attended a conference as an author.

While the trip occurred back in June in 2008, it took me half a year to have a spare time to recall and write about the trip. I was busy writing my thesis and doing a lot of other academic tasks.

Photos have been uploaded. Text will follow up when I have time.
