Biographical Sketch

Minh-Tri Pham (pronounce?) is a senior manager and a senior scientist at AIG, London, United Kingdom, specialized in machine learning and computer vision. His current interest involves reducing people's fear using deep learning.

Prior to joining AIG, he had worked for the Computer Vision Group, Toshiba Research Europe Ltd in Cambridge, United Kingdom, as a computer vision researcher. His main interest was developing algorithms for detecting objects in 3D using range sensors like depth cameras and laser scanners.

Prior to joining Toshiba, he had worked at Surrey Space Centre as a research fellow to develop algorithms for detecting rocks for Mars planetary rovers.

He graduated with an honored Bachelor degree and a PhD degree from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore in 2003 and 2009 respectively. His PhD thesis, titled "Principled Asymmetric Boosting Approaches to Rapid Training and Classification in Face Detection", focuses on asymmetric boosting and smart use of Haar-like features to improve the performance of face detectors. In 2007, Minh Tri and his supervisor, Tat-Jen Cham were one of only two first-second author pairings in the world to be awarded two prestigious oral presentations in CVPR'07 and ICCV'07, the two top-rank international conferences in computer vision. Minh Tri was awarded the PREMIA's 2nd best paper prize for their ICCV'07 paper, and two Travel Grants for their ICCV'07 and CVPR'08 papers, respectively. He was enlisted in Manquis' Who is Who in the World's 2009 Edition for his research work.

Minh Tri is keen on programming skills. When he was an undergraduate student at NTU, he won 8 prizes in international programming contests like ACM International Collegiate Programming Contests (ACM-ICPC), including three Champions and one First Runner-up. As a graduate student, he held Teaching Assistant positions in programming courses in C++ and Java. He coached NTU teams to participate in ACM-ICPC from 2003 to 2009. His students were awarded medals every year, and advanced to ACM-ICPC's World Final contests a couple of times.

How to pronounce my name

Sometimes people have difficulties pronouncing my name. This page is therefore created to resolve the problem.

I am a Vietnamese. My full name in Vietnamese is Phạm Minh Trí.

My name is properly translated into Chinese as 范明智 (thanks Zhang Peng!). However, I can barely speak Chinese.

It is also properly translated into Japanese as 范明智 (はんあきとも). My Japanese vocabulary is only slightly larger than my Chinese vocabulary though.

In English-speaking countries where there are no diacritics, my name is pronounced as follows:

  • My surname is Pham [fɑ:m].
  • My middle name is Minh [miŋ].
  • My first name is Tri [trɪ].
  • I would like to be referred to as Minh-Tri or Minh Tri [miŋ trɪ] rather than as Tri [trɪ] alone, because my first name sounds pretty much like a tree.

In Asian countries where surnames come first (e.g. Singapore), I often use my full name as Pham Minh Tri. In other countries, I would use Minh-Tri Pham.

hacked by Rexal Scooterist

Just four month after the hack by Hmei7, an Indonesian individual, my sharkdolphin.com got hacked again by another Indonesian hacker that called himself/herself as Rexal Scooterist. Although there is nothing valuable on the web site, it still got hacked. This time, the hacker was kind enough not to delete any information except the index.php file in every single subdomain of sharkdolphin.com. I have to thank him/her for teaching me another security lesson. Here is roughly how the hacker did:

1) At Sat Jul 27 12:41:45 2013, the hacker exploited a security hole on Joomla 1.x's JCE to upload a script to my old mtpham-hacked.sharkdolphin.com website, using a machine at IP address 101.255.62.233.

2) Using the script, the hacker quickly got access to all my other subdomains. He used the script to overwrite the main index.php files on them.

3) He then used a bunch of other machines with IP addresses starting with 69.171.xxx.xxx to access these newly modified index.php files. But no further damage was done to sharkdolphin.com

I have blocked all these IP addresses. Let's see what else these Indonesian hackers can do.

new web site

Hi there. I am Minh-Tri Pham. My old web site was attacked on 12 Jan 2013 by someone (or some organization maybe?). The attack was a variant of the recent popular "Hacked by Hmei7" attack. All SQL data was wiped out. Consequently, I had to reconstruct the whole web site with stronger security. The process has started, but it will take months to complete.

The old web site has been moved to another place.

http://mtpham-hacked.sharkdolphin.com

However, it has been recovered to the last time I made a back up of the SQL database, which sadly was in 2009. The old web site will go offline once I have migrated all content to the new web site.

Minh-Tri

PS: Since it was born, sharkdolphin.com has been hacked into 4 times. This time is most severe because the hacker(s) hit my weakest link, the SQL database.
